When I was out at Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island
about a week ago, I made sure to stop in and chat with HRT’s
resident cooper, Norm Pederson. If you’ve browsed my page
“Carolina’s Cupboard,” you know he’s listed as an excellent
resource for 18th and 19th century reproductions. Norm
crafts wooden buckets, tubs, piggins, butter churns, bowls
(he was working on a few as I entered), spoons, and other
assorted items. He’ll gladly do any custom project, as well.
I’m in need of a new container/bucket for my sorbetiere
(18th century ice cream maker), so we discussed specifics.

Incidentally, Norm has studied with Ron Raiselis, my other
suggested reproduction cooper. Either is fine. I’ve used both,
but I’d say Ron is my choice for 18th century repros, Norm
for 19th. It’s kinda half dozen one or the other. Take your pick!

Here’s the HRT cooperage where you can personally view
Norm’s work. Don’t quote me, but I’d say you can just go
in and chat, without purchasing a ticket. You might want
to wait until any groups of other people leave, however.
The shop is the second building to the left on Court Place,
just up the hill from Richmond Road.
