Yes Virginia, there is…SNOW! And as those who know me can tell you, I just LOVE it. A major storm has been barreling up the eastern seaboard this weekend. A bit slow to start here, it picked up earlier this evening. I’ve already been out in it… twice. It’s a lovely, true winter wonderland. HUZZAH! [...]

Whew! It’s been one busy week. There’s always lots to do to get ready for Christmas. Baking those tasty gingerbread cookies (with ginger) was just the beginning. Then there was the card writing and sending, putting up the tree, and decorating inside and out. Then the fun really began. Namely, parties! First was my annual [...]

Happy Turkey Day one and all!
the “first” Thanksgiving feast…or not
Posted in Uncategorized on November 24, 2009 | Leave a Comment »
Thanksgiving is fast approaching, that annual holiday when most everyone will be feasting on turkey, potatoes, cranberries, pumpkin pie, and other goodies. It’s a fairly standard menu, one that matches what those thankful settlers ate at Plymouth all those centuries ago. Or is it? Well…maybe. Maybe not. Before you go ballistic and accuse me of [...]
Potato Pumpkin

I keep thinking about the Potato Pumpkin that was made for use during the 18th Century Foodways Symposium at Colonial Williamsburg this past week. I’m always enthralled by such dishes, and I think this one would be fun to do. And since I have a spare pumpkin left over from Halloween, I think I shall! [...]

HUZZAH! Whew. Yep, I found my camera! Silly me, I’d gone and left it in the auditorium of the DeWitt Wallace Museum. It was found (thank you, whomever, SO MUCH!) and then turned in to the Symposium folks. HUZZAH, once again. So, without further ado, here are several photos from yesterday, starting with the exterior [...]

Wow! It’s my first full day here at Colonial Williamsburg. It started out nice enough. The ending, though, not so much. dagnabit Let me explain. I started my day by going to church. Then I went into Merchants Square and looked around a few shops. Had a great sandwich at the Cheese Shop for lunch [...]

Yesterday afternoon I went to NYC’s Penn Station and boarded a train I settled in this car A friend (that’d be you, Linda G!) had warned me that’d it be quite scuzzy. But as you see, it was not. In fact, it was as nice and modern as an airplane (but with MORE legroom!). HUZZAH! [...]
the mighty tomato
Posted in Uncategorized on November 6, 2009 | Leave a Comment »
As you may or may not recall (am not sure even I do!), I’ve posted several blurbs, off and on, about the ubiquitous tomato. It all started back when I partook of an historical cooking class, albeit in a modern kitchen, at the Institute for Culinary Education (ICE). The evening’s fare focused on typical dishes [...]

The recent Homeschooler Day out at Wyckoff was a huge success. Lovely weather, assorted activities, and enthusiastic kids made for one fantastic day. The children were able to write with a quill pen, make herb satchets, tour the farmhouse, and help prepare a meal over an open fire. Of course, I handled the cooking portion. [...]
